Not sure where the confusion lies but protection of glazing is mentioned in 13 in quite a few places for different applications. Some don't appear until 2007 edition though so for those on 2002, you won't see the same things. But there are specific criteria's mentioned for exposure protection on glass.
The term "Equivalency" is used in the mfgrs description noted below: ---------------------------- "Design Criteria The Model WS Window Sprinklers are listed by UL and C-UL, and NYC Approved (MEA 335-01-E) for use as a "Specific Application Window Sprinkler" and as open sprinklers for "Outside" use. These sprinklers are also recognized by the International Code Council Evaluation Service, Underwriters Laboratories of Canada (ULC), and the Building Materials Evaluation Commission (BMEC) for use in the Province of Ontario, Canada as providing a two-hour equivalency for a fire separation assembly, when installed in accordance with the NES Report (NER 516), ULC/ORD-C263.1 Appendix A, and BMEC Report (01-11- 263). ------------------------------ So call it what you will or won't, does it really matter? It's another option in the equation. Craig L. Our standard 13 is part of a Listing that comes out of the UL testing on rated walls not UL 199 heads. Oh and for semantics it's not an equivalency. It's a listing just like x number of layer of sheetrock or whatever. I do not need direct permission from an AHJ to use it. Just like we don't need specific permission to use any other listed rated assembly. Well as long as you follow the listing. Deviate and now it's an equivalency. I'm sure what Dave is talking about is SSU/SSP proposed or doors I see now. Will it work, of course. A fire put out by sprinklers has a hard time burning through rated walls. We've trod this ground before, it's doable and permitted by published Codes and Standards. Craig L. Normally the modification is quite specific as to one side or both. We have in these cases always used the 6' spacing rules for water curtain. What did you find? I didn't think there was anything about glass in 13. What Tim referenced is for vertical openings. Not applicable to glass walls. There is some stuff in the atrium section of IBC but that's very specific to atriums and wouldn't apply to other openings. Chris Cahill, P.E. We have a job calling for a water curtain (sprinklers on both sides of a window), Where is the direction from NFPA for this? I know TYCO makes a window sprinkler, but isn't there direction for standard sprinklers in NFPA somewhere? Thank You, Bobby Gillett Sr. Project Manager Key Fire Protection, Inc.
