Just found CPVC.  It's even higher:  37 x 10^-6.  Yikes!

Coefficient of Thermal Expansion

Carbon Steel:   6.7 x 10^-6  (or 0.0000067)
Copper:  9.3 x 10^-6
PVC:  28 x 10^-6
Wood, fir:  2.1 x 10^-6
Wood, oak parallel to grain:  3.0 x 10^-6

In all cases multiply the coefficient times the length of the pipe in feet and
the temp change in degrees F.  The result will be in feet of expansion, so
multiply by 12 to get inches.

In your case, the steel pipe is expanding 2 to 3 times more than your wooden
walkway.  Since it is a floating dock, you will need to have flexible
connections, or swing joints at the top and bottom of your walkway anyhow.
That might be enough to accomodate the expansion.  How much rise/fall will your
dock have relative to the shore platform?  I recall awhile back that someone
recommended a flex connector (Thom, maybe?) that had been used successfully in
such a situation.

Note the much, much higher coefficient for PVC.  (I could not find CPVC
quickly, but expect it to be comparable.)  This would explain George's snaky
CPVC piping installation for which he did not get all his due.

Hello Ron,

It is not a building, Wooden walkway to a floating dock.
