Your question only asked about Class, but other factors are important. I think this would be designed for Group A plastics because you haven't provided enough information to provide other advice. Seems you have Class IV and maybe encapsulated but you haven't mentioned this possibility. Of course the mixed commodity approach could also be used to reduce the design classification, but severe restrictions would be placed on stored quantities and locations of the more hazardous materials. Under the 2007 edition the roof height plays a role in determining densities if Roof Height - Storage Height > 20 ft. Are you thinking about two approaches - one approach for the 20 ft storage and one approach for the 6 ft storage? What about other commodities such as flammable/combustible liquids? Is there an Owner's Information Certificate?

We have a contract to retrofit an existing building for a "White Cap Construction Supply". This company sells a wide variety of items and no one item has a high concentration. Rack storage is a maximum of 20'. Racks cover roughly 60 to 70 percent of the area and the balance is cantilever racks 6' high. This has mixed Commodity Class with in our opinion is class II, III, & IV, and possibly small areas of group "A" plastics. What class should this be designed to ? If you are not familiar with this company you can see there web site at www.whitecap.com. Any advise would be appreciated.
