Could be to prevent the elevator machine room or elevator shaft flow switches
from tripping if the system feeding these heads are drained.

Subject: elevator related sprinklers

UFC 3-600 shows a check valve in the line serving a sprinkler in an elevator
machine room or hoistway. Just wondering if anyone can state what the purpose
of the check is in that line. Looking at Figures 6-8 through 6-9.
