Right. Provisions for seismic protection of buildings and building
systems in the IBC and also in NFPA 13 are now all based on ASCE 7. We
rolled a new code on 1/1/14, so moved forward to ASCE 7, 2010 here in
CA. ASCE standards establish parameters for when a building is
required to be seismically engineered. The structural engineer of
record for a given project is usually charged - sometimes in conjunction
with the soils engineer - with determining whether a particular parcel
is subject to those provisions.  As Travis says, seismic has changed;
IMHO, it's not for the sprinkie to determine if seismic protection is
required, only to verify with the SEOR or through the construction
documents whether or not it's required.

Seismic has changed DRASTICALLY from what we used to do. The SE will
have to provide you the structural design category and the Ss for the
project. Hopefully it is SDC of A or B and you don't have to worry
about anything.

But, it is definitely no longer 40' / 80' and 4 way every change in
direction.

Category C or higher. If so, bracing is required on fire sprinkler
systems. I don't think the seismic maps really apply any longer. You
need to know the Seismic Design Category, then you need the Ss values so
you can calculate your bracing.

local requirement.
