Using 2009 IBC and the example of the pool area as 15,500sf and Group A-3. This pool area would required sprinklers. IBC 903.2.1.3 requires sprinklers where the A-3 area exceeds 12,000 sf or 300+ occupants or not at the level of exit discharge. If the design professional is taking area and/or height increase(s), fire resistance rating reductions, or other construction alternatives then IBC 903.2.1.3 does not apply and sprinklers are required throughout per IBC 903.3.1.1.1 w/ its 5 exceptions. And if the A-3 pool area is not a separate fire area from the hotel/motel then it becomes "the tail that wags the dog", 13R would not be the standard to be used for the hotel/motel no matter how many stories - full 13 throughout (IBC 508.3.1). One pool incident (read drowning) usually closes pools at small or franchised motels and starts other uses, the big chains have armies of lawyers and go on swimming.

It seems that some think NFPA 13 is the only place to look for guidance on
design requirements. The building and fire codes are the primary source telling
you when and where and under what condition a building must be provided with
sprinklers.

Go to the Building Code: (using 2009 for reference)

Swimming pool without spectator is an A-3 occupancy. [Section 303]

Table 503 sets limitations on areas for A-3 occupancies based on building
construction types.

So sprinklers may or may not be required based on whether you are under or over
the area limit.

So for example, for a Type IIA construction you can go 15,500 sq. ft, beyond
that you have to provide sprinklers. See Section 507.6, 2. for additional data
on building area requirements.

Guyz/Gals:

I know that, at one time, there was a 'blurb' about sprinkler protection over swimming
pool areas. We have just spent a fairly significant amount of time looking for the
'requirement' in recent editions of 13 - and have been unable to find a specific
citation. Aside from "all areas are required to be sprinklered..." can anyone
assist us with a specific reference to swimming pool areas (hotel/motels, et al) - in any
Code - needing to be sprinkler protected. I remember reading about the possibility of the
pool being emptied and the pool itself and/or surrounding areas being used for 'storage'
of combustible materials, but that was years ago...

Any assistance will be much appreciated - we are performing a third-party
review and our PE/FPE is stuck.

Regards to All. Gracias!!

It's also in NFPA 25 for good measure.

I know I've seen it somewhere but can someone point me to the section of
NFPA-13 that says once you remove a head you have to replace it with a new one?
