Don't be quick to dismiss the lack of a "code" requirement for
displaying the coupon. NFPA 13 or IBC/IFC aside, the local jurisdiction
may have enacted a requirement for them to be displayed. I've been told
by more than one contractor in the San Francisco area that you haven't
experienced AHJ wrath until you bring them welded piping without the
coupons affixed. It was explained that such a requirement was one of
their responses to the mess that resulted from Dennis Frye.
Your mileage may vary.

Thanks for all the insight. It would appear that there is no "code" for the
display of the coupon, just a measure of "good practice".

Every time I see the coupon, I wonder if it is the coupon from that pipe and
that hole. I also wonder, how do you retrieve the coupon from a riser?

I agree with all the should's. Hanging the cutout is a fantastic
idea, ain't required though which was the original question.

There is the requirement, as mentioned, for a coupon retrieval system
on the Above Ground Test Certificate. there should then be a shop SOP
and a field SOP. Attaching the coupon to the tee is a pretty good SOP
for the field work.

What's the difference between the field cut and the shop cut? There
isn't an AHJ in the world that can tell if I shop drilled or field
drilled. At my last company often enough we'd shop drill. Or the
shop welded cut out?
Or is someone saying they all need to be attached? I don't see where
any need be. And the requirements for retrieval in no way shape or
form requires attachment. How exactly to you show compliance with
the dimensions for groove depth and width, thread specs, etc? 'Cuz
you know to an extent there is slop in these and they hold at least
for a while outside specs. Do ya'll hang gauge templates to every
fitting to show compliance?
Do you hang a weld x-ray on each weld? 'Cuz you know there are
requirements that can't be readily seen if they are in compliance.
Do you hang the ball peen hammer next to the 'fixed' dripping welds
that occasionally occur?
Every seen the weld scraping from the factory produced pipe get
dropped and adhered to the inside of the next pipe in the formation
line? Now if I knock them loose I can show they were removed by
attaching. Wonder how you show compliance if they didn't occur in the
first place?
My real point in my ramblings is there comes a place where we have to
trust all involved did their job right. Do things get left in the
pipe occasionally? Sure do, but we need to tackle keeping the valve
open before we get into the minutia of the other possible failures
which all together don't add up to a lot of failures.

No reference in NFPA 13 that I'm aware. Usually see the
requirement in a specification. You might want to look at a
manufacturer's installation instruction sheet that is part of the
listing for the
device.

Does anyone know the actual Code for requiring the attachment of a
drill out to a Mech Tee?
I know its good practice, but does anyone know the actual code, or
is there one?
