But if they're stretched or projected to 18' in one direction, you have to
calculate them for the 18 squared. Or am I missing something?

That is using a basis of 16x16 and assuming the sprinklers are maxed out in a
perfect world.

I believe the handbook is trying to clarify that even though you could go to
900 sq ft, you still have to cover a minimum of 5 sprinklers. So, in theory,
if you have 20x20 spacing, even though you could do 900 sq ft for a 10'
ceiling, you would have a potential 2000 sq ft design area. It is not saying
you have to do an area of 5x sprinkler coverage. If you sprinklers cover
18x12, you are required to calculate them at 18x18 listings. If you get the QR
reduction to 900 sq ft, you are still going to have to calc a minimum of 5
sprinklers.

If the sprinklers are 18' apart or 9' off of walls, then 5 x 324 SF would be
correct.

You are reading wrong. You need to calculate 5 ex COV sprinklers at a minimum.
You don't have to do 5x324. If they only cover 1400 sq ft for whatever reason
so be it. You still calc 5.

I HAVE A 750 SQFT CLASS ROOM. DUE TO THE CONFIGUARTION OF THE LIGHTS AND A FEW

IF I READ THE CODE CORRECTLY. I NEED TO CALCULATE 5 TIMES 324 SQFT. WHICH IS
1620 SQFT. WONDERING IF I AM READING THIS RIGHT?

I DON'T SEE THE ADVANTAGE WHEN I CAN USE 7 STANDARD Q.R. SPRINKLERS TO COVER
THE SAME ROOM. 11' CEILINGS MY DESIGN AREA WOULD ONLY BE 923 SQFT.

AM I MISSING SOMETHING?

THANKS
