Make sure it's a true 50pin SCSI and not a 68 or 80pin drive with an adapter because they can be a pin sometimes. A 50pin SCSI ut of a Mac will plug in and can be formatted using your OS 9 CD utilities and install OS 9 with no problems at all. 2GB will be plenty of space for a scanning station but 4GB would be better for Photoshop.
There is at least one seller on Ebay who lists drives as 50 pin in the Subject (title) line but when you read the small print down in the Item Description, you find that it is an adapted drive--and even that fine print is a little weasly. You have to pay close attention to realize they're saying it's an adapted drive from 80 pin SCA. So be careful.
My favotite SCSI's are Quantum brand becuse I have had several and they se em to last longer.
I like the IBM brand drives myself because they seem quieter. But I like my Quantums too.
Watch out for the Seagate Barracuda ST32550N. This is a true 50 pin drive, but it's from about 1995, sounds like a jet engine, exhales heat like a forge and is very slow by today's standards (~6 MB/s true performance).
However, the four that I have, have been rock solid reliable. They were a RAID in my main machine (pre-Umax) for several years with no problems. Of course, I added six extra fans to that machine for the heat, and lined the inside of the case with speaker batting to absorb the noise...
