Philo Agora's talk next Tuesday, October 28 will be Allan McCay on Free will, retributive punishment and sentencing in the courts

This is one of the more fascinating topics that Philo Agora has discussed . And relevant to current developments in science and philosophy. Sentencing considers deterrence, rehabilitation and incapacitation . However there is a retributive aim that looks back to the wrongfulness of the offence rather than to the future Allan focuses on the retributive aim of sentencing and considers whether the science of behavioural genetics gives reason to believe that some offenders are less deserving of punishment than was thought.

Allan is a lawyer and a philosopher .He has been visiting researcher at the philosophy departments of the University of Stirling and California Riverside. He is currently a PhD candidate in the Law Faculty at the University of Sydney and is admitted as a solicitor in Hong Kong, Scotland, NSW and Tasmania
