Philo Agora's talk this Tuesday, is Matt del
Nevo, Lou Andreas-Salome.and Friedrich Nietzsche
Behind every great man is a woman, they tell
us This time it is one woman and three great
men This first of a series of three talks is on
the influence of Russian born Louise
Andreas-Salome (1861-1937). Nietzsche proposed
marriage, the great lyric poet Rainer Maria Rilke
had a life-long love affair, and Freud sought her
guidance. Lou Salome wrote 15 novels plus
philosophical and psycho-analytical works. With
her indifference to moral conventions and
insatiable intellectual curiosity, Louise Salome
challenged the gender roles of her day. Each talk
- Nietzsche, Rilke, Freud - will be complete in
itself, with the last two scheduled for 2010.
Matt was for many years the convenor of the
philosophy café at Berkelouws books. He is full
time faculty lecturer in philosophy at the
Catholic Institute and has recently published
some of his philosophical thoughts in The Valley Way of the Soul.
