Thanks Jonathan, this is an important point to call out explicitly.
IIUC, we're bound by Mozilla's legal requirements (and our desire to
just plain do the right thing!) not to send this sort of
"non-transactional" email to users unless they have explicitly said it's OK.
You may not have seen it if you're a long-time sync user, but we do now
have a mechanism for soliciting this consent - a recent Firefox Accounts
update added a "communication preferences" page and an opt-in checkbox
on signup.
And don't worry, you weren't opted in by default :-)
Does it sound less spammy in that context?
