Yes, that's entirely correct, it's never about focusing on a tool for any
reason other than it's failure to effectively produce useful content. It's
wordpress this week, or blogger last year, radio the year before or whatever
tool comes next. We've used the 'big stick' approach in other situations,
while at the same time helping them come to grips with the technical nuances
involved. As our help aided them in grasping the issues their fixes
improved the quality of feeds.

That we suggested to them we'd be left with no choice than to start marking
entire groups of feeds produced by their tools was just that, a suggestion.
Not a threat, per se, as we were also helping them learn whatever was
necessary to actually fix it. We actually 'put up with' blogger's bad date
handling for quite a while, but nagged the heck out of the developer until
he finally got the code changes pushed through to the process on their end.
This was also when we pushed for feeds to contain creation tool identifiers.
Better to see a problem developing and reach out to the tool developer FIRST
instead of just whacking the feeds. Especially when we know the content
producers would be powerless to fix it themselves.

We've been really avoiding letting the poller do anything to a feed. If the
code runs rampant (as it's been known to do now and then) and whacks a bunch
of feeds it really causes trouble. This is also why I've pressed Jeff over
the years for the better searching and sorting options the list view
provides.

I think there are some ways to check for it like looking for non-ascii
character values in a title. That'd be a pretty quick indicator a feed's
not english. But it breaks down pretty rapidly beyond that.

It seems we need some sort of additional state for "the poller thinks it's
broken". This as a way for folks to either focus on this or avoid it being
something the casual user is burdened with seeing.

Thanks. I've stressed time and time again this is not about being
judgemental on anything other than technical issues. It's complex enough
dealing with simple technical issues without sliding down in the quagmire of
judging content "value". That and the text medium doesn't always lend
itself to conveying effective 'tone' for messages.
