Right again Elijah.

I've tried a number of tricks in deciphering language use. It's really hit
and miss.

When software starts doing things automatically it really turns people off.
Software is wrong "often enough", or when it makes decisions people can't
easily understand, they lose trust in it.

We could certainly have the poller just RIP through the database and
IMMEDIATELY start whacking feeds. This would end up being a HUGE public
relations disaster as it tore through entire ranges of feeds and left their
authors feeling attacked by it. No, we decided long ago it was better to
leave things up to real people and try to give them better tools. This has
not be an easy task.

Anyway, I wonder if someone could raise this issue again with the current
version of Wordpress and suggest how to best deal with it? I think perhaps
some of the thinking here is based on old code and may well be resolved more
easily in the newer stuff.

automated language identification is *very* hard to do well. simple regex
hunts might get you up to 80% or so, but that really isn't very
satisfactory when compared to human-processing of all the feeds.
