Under ideal condition, you only need to change one thing in the
registry manually. Under the

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RIT\The Bat!

key, find an entry called "Working Directory", and change it to
reflect the new location. That's it. Remember to export the registry
one more time to reflect the new settings (for import into Win2k).

If your last installation (before WinME) didn't set the mail
directory manually, then you shouldn't need to change this. To make
sure, you can check out the account properties in TB (in WinME), go
to "File & directories", and see under the "Home directory" entry.
If it says "<default>", then you don't have to touch this registry
key. (For extra safety, you may still check out the key in regedit
(again in WinME), and you should see entries like "Dir #1", "Dir #2"
..., depending on how many accounts you have, and their values
should be empty.)

A tiny correction first: it's not a key, but an entry (registry keys
are items you can see on the left hand side in regedit), under the
same key as the "Working Directory" entry.

If its data value is empty, then you're using the "default" and
nothing should be changed.

This should be a legacy entry, and not needed anymore. On my
machine, the value is always "E:\Internet\TheBat\The_Bat!.ABK",
which is invalid, for now the address book is in .ABD format. In
fact, I could delete the entry in registry and TB would have no
trouble finding my address book. (TB would nevertheless recreate the
entry, with the same invalid value, so there's no benefit deleting
it, either. I guess there's some legacy code in TB.)

The address book location is now recorded in the "AddrBook.INI", and
you shouldn't have to change it unless yours isn't in the default
location (same with message base root). In case TB couldn't find
your address book (highly unlikely), you can always use the "File |
Open" command to locate it.

> HKCU/Software/RIT/The Bat!/ProgramDir

These are also registry entries, not keys, and yes, they need to be
changed to reflect the new program location (on D:), if you do
import the registry backup. I would suggest you delete those two
entries in the .reg file (with an editor) before importing it, then
you don't have to change them, for they are already set correctly
with your TB installation in Win2k.

This is the entry (again, not key) that records the location (full
path) for your message base.

If memory serves (I, after all, installed TB for the first time
several months ago), TB would ask you for the location where you
would like to store your mail. (This happens only to new
installation.) If you accept TB's default, it would store your mail
under the \MAIL sub-directory under your TB program folder. If you
put another location there, TB would store your mail there. If the
location exist, TB should find your old mail without trouble. (Not
sure about this, especially if TB could find all the accounts you
have. If it doesn't, it should after you import your registry
backup.)

I don't think you'll have trouble restoring the registry backup
saved in Win95/98 (not sure about WinME, for I don't use it). It's
Win95/98 that has trouble restoring registry backup saved in Win2k.

One final suggestion: disable the "Check mail at start-up" option
for all your accounts in WinME before using TB for the first time in
Win2k (or better, before you move your mail to the E: drive). It's
not necessary if everything goes smoothly as expected. It's just
extra precaution.

After you first launch TB in Win2k, check to see if everything is in
place (accounts, folders, address books, filters, etc.). Then check
mail manually for all accounts and see if TB works (including
filtering mail) properly. Then it should be safe to re-enable the
"Check mail at start-up" option.
