I don't think Marck is or ever was saying that anti-virus software is
superfluous. He was simply saying that TB! will not infect your machine
with a virus unless you specifically intervene by running the virus. TB!
will not execute malicious java script in HTML e-mail. That's all he was
saying.

TB! will not prevent you from downloading viruses or trojans from your
POP account. The fact that your anti-virus program has detected a virus
in your mail doesn't implicate TB!.

It's not a matter of luck. It's a matter of being in the know (i.e.
being aware what types of attachments may contain viruses) and being
very careful. Way too many people are not like this and therefore need
constant system scanning underway.

TB! is on the way towards being really safe. The next step would be to
make no attachments executable via the interface but only viewable. No
accidental double clicks would occur, and no ignorant users will ignore
warnings because they simply cannot run the attachments but only can
view them or scan them for viruses.
