I've since loosened my views on the subject.

What others wish to do with my messages doesn't really concern me,
*as long as* they don't distribute, send a copy of, or present my
altered message to others as if it were the original.

Also, if I receive a message that could be used as evidence at a
later date, then I'd be silly to alter it in any way. This is where
discretion and prudence comes in.

IOW's, I don't share the view that messages shouldn't be altered
*ever*. It depends on the situation and the context and therefore
does admittedly deserve some consideration.
