Here’s the thing about Leno: He’s a politician. He thinks and acts like a politician every single second of his life. Ratings are his votes. If you view Leno as a politician everything he does suddenly makes sense. He is always in campaign mode. He hits the road pressing the flesh all the time. Everyone is his friend. Everything is justifiable if it gets him more ratings (votes). He can lie, connive, use dirty tricks... it’s all okay as long as people watch him. Acting like a ‘nice guy’ is mandatory. He’ll stand all day with people on the sidewalk for pictures and a chat. But his word essentially means nothing. Every utterance must undermine his rivals.
Dave, Conan and Jimmy are comedians and performers. They would have an artist’s code, where your word means something and honesty in all forms matters. Leno must laugh at this naiveté in the big bad world of network television. Gary
