Not necessarily. E.g. I find transliterations very helpful when I study
sound recordings of a language just for the sake of phonetics and I
can't really wait to learn the script first or I'm not proficient in it
yet. It all depends on the particular case. Of course I'm not really a
specialist in any single one of them. But also, comparative/historical
linguistics can hardly get along without them.
