Because, dear boy, if you insist on mounting a file system so that only
one user can read it, then the only way SBS could read it would be to BE
that user (do you wish SBS to run as you? only after you log in? What
if your spouse wants music too?)

I have not said that you should run as root: I have pointed out that is
the ONLY solution you accept, even if you refuse to accept it.

You want SBS to be able to read any file even if file system
permissions on your mounted NTFS drive forbid it.

That means that you want SBS to be exempt from Unix permissions, which,
again, means root.

Explain, please, what other permission you are talking about that
allows non-root processes to read files that permmissions would normally
deny.

You seem to keep missing that.

Okay, then change the frigging permissions on your mount point to be
correct. If you want SBS to read it, fix the permissions. That is
-your- job as system admin, not the job of a package or even Ubuntu.. it
is your job.

Wrong.

Ubuntu is NOT "all linux distros"

Really.

EXPLAIN WHAT THE FIX is if you really believe this is an SBS problem.

Hell, explain -exactly- what the problem is: Not "it doesn't work",
but "SBS should be able to read from NTFS drives regardless of
permissions set on the drive itself".
