Hmmm. So, if found the info
id squeezeboxserver
uid=116(squeezeboxserver) gid=65534(nogroup) groups=65534(nogroup)

and then for me:
id john
uid=1000(john) gid=1000(john)
groups=1000(john),4(adm),20(dialout),24(cdrom),46(plugdev),105(lpadmin),119(admin),122(sambashare)

and then:
sudo gedit /etc/fstab (which makes me nervous, by the way)
gives me:

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# Use 'blkid -o value -s UUID' to print the universally unique
identifier
# for a device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to
name
# devices that works even if disks are added and removed. See
fstab(5).
#
# <file system> <mount point>   <type>  <options>       <dump>  <pass>
proc            /proc           proc    nodev,noexec,nosuid 0       0
# / was on /dev/sda1 during installation
UUID=6f886035-a057-490d-a03b-86c8fc8e5283 /               ext4
errors=remount-ro 0       1
# swap was on /dev/sda5 during installation
UUID=900ed3bf-376d-4d1f-9955-bcaa9b6e42b2 none            swap    sw
0       0

--------------------------------------------------------

So, I can't really see where to plug anything in to change permissions.
Dang.
