i have those all the time. the secret is to zip the files and then transfer them. i've noticed a speedup of about two thirds as well when the file is zipped, even if the zipped filed is not two thirds smaller.

I've had various errors and problems, though not exactly like those. I
bought a new HD especially for the Mac, so it's got a 40GB drive - quite a
bit, by the standards of my network!

So with all this unused space, I made backups of several other machines -
the 7GB of data from my main fileserver, a dozen or so CD-ROMs either as
ISOs or files, and 17GB of MP3s.

Now I find I can't copy them off again; it fails after a few min with an
I/O or file read error.

And some of those CD images are now the only copy.

But I've found that if I unload the GUI, the Mac will serve the files to a
PC much more reliably.

Log out, then at the log in screen, log in as a user called

The screen goes black and presents you with a text-mode Unix command line,
but all the server stuff is still running in memory.

In this mode, I've copied 1.2GB+ of stuff off the Mac onto Windows in one
hit, no problems. As soon as it's done and the Mac goes idle, it often
reboots, but that's OK.
