I don't know if Serial Ports work under OS X on a Beige G3. Do they?
Did you have to use Xpostfacto to install it? Maybe they have serial
ports listed as not working ... I believe they work on a 9500 that I
have , although I have not tried them. They also work for many serial
port applications but not all ... like I thinking printing doesn;t
work. I guess one question you need to have answered, is are their
drivers for OS X that utilize the serial ports for MIDI transmission.
I have used a M-Audio 2496 PCI card, that not only I/Os sound via
analog ports, but has a MIDI connector as well ... the old standard
MIDI connections (by passing a serial to MIDI box that I have just
laying on my shelf now). That works because M-Audio has drivers which
run under OS X ... well, most of the time.
Don't know if it would work on a Beige ... and I do have trouble with
the card, since it is on a legacy Mac ... M-Audio doesn;t support cpu
upgraded Macs ... and sometimes, the card will not work properly. Sort
of at a deadend I believe with OS upgrades (Panther)
My new keyboard also has USB MIDI, so I am now using the USB connection
I got with a PCI card.
Of course, that doesn;t help you out.
