Ok fellas--from all over the globe, btw, I happen to be a native of
Mexico, so on and on it goes with the diversity of our crowd--
You're going to be surprised. I can use a MIDI keyboard afterall
through my serial port, with Garageband and any other music program that
use MIDI, like Simple Synth, iPiano--it's great for learning music even
if you can't use Garageband because of not having a G4 because other
music software is much less demanding. The secret is installing the
Stealth Serial Port Driver from G3. I've been told it even works in
10.4. I couldn't believe it. Works like a charm. Responds to the
pedal, the intensity with which you hit the keys, everything. GeeThree
has installers of the driver for 10.2, 10.3, and 10.4, but don't use
those, instead get the Stealth MIDI Plug-in for Mac OS X:
http://www.geethree.com/downloads/stealthmidi.html
This one will enable your built in serial port for MIDI (and other
uses), whereas the other ones specifically try to enable their hardware,
which you won't need if you have an old Mac that already has serial
built-in to it. You'll drag a MIDI driver folder into your
Library/Audio/Midi Drivers directory (in 10.3 at least) and then use a
program included in the download to configure it, then use the MIDI
setup utility found in Utilities to complete the configuration.
I have to say I was a little astounded. Got the tip from a Julie on the
Apple discussions.

Thanks Peter and all who responded. I do have a
serial to usb converter but it doesn't support MIDI
I'll get that usb midi converter sometime. Ah, but
first things first. I need to have my keyboard
repaired. And it might be cheaper to replace than to
fix. I'll see. It's an Alesis.
Pretty cool you're in NORWAY and here I am in TEXAS
(USA). Never ceases to amaze me.

Oh ... I thought someone was looking for a Serial
Port to USB Port type
converter ... which I don't believe exists.
USB MIDI yes,
Serial MIDI yes,
but Serial USB ... No? ...
USB to serial port (for items such as printers etc)
exist. The other way:
Not. USB is "smart", serial "dumb", one can always
"dumb down" a smart
signal, but I doubt anyone will make a converter the
other way. Seems to
me I have seen this question before, either here or
the PCI PowerMac
list...
I’m sure the local Radio Shack will sell you a
usb-to-serial-adapter for
not much money.
Good luck getting it to work!
