yea, but speculation is so much fun! LOL
After months of experiment, I've decided to revert all but one of my
Tiger machines back to Panther. While some things definitely improve
with each major OS release, others just seem to get bogged down in
new eye-candy. It's not much of a problem for new Macs since their
newer GPUs are built to take this load, but it doesn't suit the
unsupported LEM approach.
Whoa.
If no fast GPU is available, Tiger either doesn't try to do the
effect, or it reverts to using the algorithms from Panther. So no
speed diff there.
On slower Macs, Tiger becomes as responsive as Panther when you turn
off Spotlight. No big deal there.
As for the rest of the eye-candy - just turn that off too if it bugs
you, with a tool like Cocktail. I've noticed Finder seems to speed
up a tiny bit if you turn off the fancy zooming effects. And Safari
speeds up a lot if you turn off the favicon cache.
Speed comparison: With Spotlight off - Tiger's Finder displays a
window with 1000 items on my 300-MHz Smurf only two seconds after our
1.5 GHz PowerBook G4 does it in Panther. Not too shabby, IMO,
especially since it takes our 1.4 GHz PC another 30 to 40 seconds to
do the same...
I guess you guys are seeing a similar trend with progressive
versions of iLife.
Yea. But then again ... iLife isn't the beat-all end-all that Apple
says it is. Apps such as GraphicConverter are superior. etc.
And the underlying problem is QuickTime. Since 5.0.3, it has gotten
progressively slower anyway.
