I always buy new versions to support the software. 3D is a very competitive market, but I prefer RS3D for its clean 'mathematical' feel that distinguishes it from, say, Blender.
Features and new technologies are critical though. It's the "Red Queen's race" at work (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Queen's_Hypothesis).
