We should probably be wary of jumping too readily to the conclusion
that anyone who uses Microsoft software is dishonest or incompetent.

Isn't that the version that only writes .docx files and not
.doc? If so, how'd he read them in OpenOffice?
Word 2007 saves documents in the .docx format by default, but can
also save files in the older .doc format. So the answer is "easily".

I didn't know there was a legal way to download Microsoft Word! How
did you pull that off?
Many Microsoft applications are available in trial versions (but
these may be available only in some areas). Office 2007 is currently
available in the US in a sixty-day trial version.

I imagine that he didn't mean "download" in the internet since of
copying it down from a remote server. He probably meant that he
installed it from a CD. Many folks who aren't as well versed in the
terminology get this confused.
In the absence of evidence to the contrary, I'm happier to assume
that Mr Smith knew what he was talking about. He could either have
downloaded the application from a private server, delivering a
product for which he had a paid licence, or else - more likely - have
downloaded the trial version direct from Microsoft.
