I can certainly try that, however seeing that I'm implementing block lists on the postfix level, wouldn't that double the lookups?

certainly not. you have doubled them when you set up checks in postfix.
SA clearly uses them too, otherwise it would not get the BLOCKED reply.

And as an FYI, I'm running my own DNS server.

your own caching DNS server? does your mail server use it?
You seem to have too much mail then.
