I don't have any experience with your particular Dell model.  My
experience with other Dells has been a mixed bag: some of them
work well with Linux, some won't even boot the installer (and
yes, I tried multiple distros on the one that wouldn't boot).

In my not at all humble opinion, though, the best Linux
compatibility I've seen in a laptop was from a Thinkpad T-42.
The T-series Thinkpads also offer decent video, integrated
wireless, light weight and good battery life.

I don't own a Thinkpad, since I prefer my Powerbook for my own
use.  I did, however, use a T-42 for several months at my last
company, and if I were looking for a PC laptop to run Linux (or,
more likely, FreeBSD), I'd go straight to the T-series.
