The T42 I used until recently was the one with Centrino, and it
worked very well under FreeBSD (though I believe I did have to
download a driver for the wireless network.).  A few other people
in the office had the same model, and ran Linux on it (Suse and
I think a couple of other distros), and I never heard of any
compatibility problems.
