Sony VAIO laptops have generally worked well for me. My current laptop is a little VAIO and a previous one was also. They tend to be slightly expensive, but to date I've never had any hardware failures or incompatibilities. I've also had an older HP zt series that ran linux wonderfully and without complaint.
Of course, if I were you I would check Google and Linux on Laptops (http://www.linux-laptop.net/) to see other folks' reviews before I bought anything.
