In my not at all humble opinion, though, the best Linux
compatibility I've seen in a laptop was from a Thinkpad T-42.
The T-series Thinkpads also offer decent video, integrated
wireless, light weight and good battery life.
I'll second that. I have a thinkpad, and since I got it, it's had
ubuntu, debian, fedora and freebsd loaded on. Wireless worked quickly
and easily in all of them (the ipw2200 and ipw2915 cards are supported
beautifully), and I haven't had any complaints whatsoever..
I'll throw in my vote for the Thinkpad. I have a T30 and I've had few
problems. The worst being th wireless card, or lack thereof. Eventually
I bought the Intel mini-PCI, but since it didn't come with the laptop
the Thinkpad refused to boot with the card inside. However, there was an
online document on how to get around that. With a little tinkering and
help from friends it works beautifully now. The easiest route would just
be to get one with wireless already installed. My sister has a T42 with
Centrino which she loves, though I can't tell you how good Linux works
on that one since she won't let me install it. :-(
