I think your client is wrong. If I'm looking to buy a widget, I'll visit a bunch of widget-selling sites. At each one I'll expect to be able to find the particular widget I want quickly, and I'll want to see whether it's in stock, how much it costs, and what the delivery time is. If one of these sites is badly designed and makes it difficult for me to actually do what I want, I'll stare at the homepage for a couple of seconds and then click "Back". I suppose if their business is one of a kind or has an outstanding reputation in their particular area then it's a different story, but if they're competing in a crowded market they'd better make it as easy as they can for their customers to give them money.
