I think a better way to fix this is to add a feature to allow players
to get that data at any time.
This has been requested several times on the forums.
I have to agree with Laurent here. I think the argument about looking at
the combat dialog is roughly analgous to people who think that being
pretty sharp with basic math is unimportant to be a good programmer (not
to mention to be good at a wide variety of disciplines), since you can
just use a calculator or a computer.
I think a good player will sometimes use the dialog to verify things,
but they will calculate numerous possibilities and their results when in
a complex game position. The combat dialog just can't replace that.
(That's not to say it wouldn't be nice to improve it and make it more
accessible though).
