Was there any reason for these additions?  I don't recall them being
discussed, they were simply committed as yet another cool feature.
If you take them back out, the formula reverts to Dave's rather simple
formulation, and we are back in a situation that somewhat resembles KISS.

These were already possible and used by WML; the problem was that you couldn't tell the exact damage a unit would do without attacking with it. Is having the code support for that such a bad thing? It doesn't affect MP, but it does give scenario and campaign designers more creative freedom without having to work around the engine's limitations.
