This has been requested several times on the forums.
I have to agree with Laurent here. I think the argument about
looking at the combat dialog is roughly analgous to people who
think that being pretty sharp with basic math is unimportant to be
a good programmer (not to mention to be good at a wide variety of
disciplines), since you can just use a calculator or a computer.
No, that's not what I'm arguing.
I'm arguing not for a dialog, but for a mouseover. This kind of
"size-up" calculation is so fundamental to playing the game, just
like movement costs, that it would be practical to have it such that
when someone moves the mouse over an enemy unit, they get a little
bezel that shows them an extremely simplified listing of attack
damages (# of attacks, damage, and CTH - range might not even get
shown; if it were, it would be through an icon).
I think a good player will sometimes use the dialog to verify
things, but they will calculate numerous possibilities and their
results when in a complex game position. The combat dialog just
can't replace that. (That's not to say it wouldn't be nice to
improve it and make it more accessible though).
You're right, the combat dialog can't replace that - which is why I
wasn't asking it to.
