Hi Conrad,

Elecraft configure audio sources from menu options on the rig. Kenwood do also on some rigs but most use the PTT connection to configure the audio source (SS or PKS). USB audio is an afterthought that adds a third source (LAN audio is another), so they need menu options to configure. The Kenwood rigs with CAT commands to mimic the PTT pin used are one way that they resolve audio switching.

None of the options is more correct than any other, although the default settings in menu items are critical for most users. There will always be some usage scenarios that require extra configuration.

Kenwood have chosen a default of getting Tx audio from PKD if you key with PKS, that is a long standing case across many Kenwood rigs. It means if you plug in a TNC it "just works".

I believe the K3 series rigs have the LINE IN and USB audio in parallel with no switching.

So why does the WSJT-x  software work exactly as I want using the USB codec in and out on the K3S? Is it because in the K3S CAT commands there is no possibility to use transmit audio source and so therefore it does not matter?

I can key the K3S using the PTT or CAT and still have USB audio.

I have full CAT control and use RTS for PTT. This keys the rig and the TX audio goes via the internal USB audio codec. Just like I want it to. It would be more flexible to let the user choose what happens. However Kenwood have decided to disable the USB input if the SS (PTT) is used. There is no way that I can see to use non-CAT PTT and USB Audio in the TS-890S configuration. This is an oversight by Kenwood. The rig has hundreds of options but using PTT via the accessory socket while still using USB audio is not one of them.

Currently I am using audio from a UMC202HD soundcard via the ACC2 socket, I really did not want to do that. I do not like to use CAT PTT to drive the sequencer, but I may have to. It is far better to have the RF drive go over last – always.

Anyway, it seems that WSJT-X is behaving correctly and that the TS-890S has limitations. So wrong email reflector.

Probably best if I add a few snips. The first configuration works
perfectly. However, in this mode using USB you must select
Rear/Data as the TX audio source. I wish to use the REMOTE SOCKET
PTT as the radio goes over last from a sequencer as is often the
case for VHF ops. I have always run this way. BUT the Transmit
audio source is disabled when you use RTS. The PTT works but I can
no longer access the USB input, this is a BIG problem for me. Why
can I not select the transmit audio source?

I think that this is a HAMLIB bug. How long does it take to fix
these things generally as I assume that this is a Hamlib problem?

Conrad,

it seems you have not understood the purpose of the transmit audio source option in WSJT-X. It is available for rigs like the TS-890s which have a CAT PTT command  (TX) that has two variants to select the Tx audio source. If you are not using CAT PTT then WSJT-X via Hamlib cannot use the TX CAT command, because you have explicitly told it not to.

Regardless of the above, the pin you to key the rig also has the same function, if you use the PTT pin then the audio source is the mic socket, if you use the PKS pin on the ACC socket then the Tx audio source is the PKD pin on the same socket.

So in summary, it is down to you to wire the PTT to the correct pin on the rig, neither WSJT-X nor Hamlib can do that for you!
