Re: [digitalradio] Re: QEX Article on HF Digital Propagation

2007-10-28 Thread Rein Couperus

Or do they use a 3000 Hz BW for testing purposes and compare modes that way?
Yes to compare. For example, I want to compare modes at S/N=-10 dB:

I send a a signal of 1 mWatt and 10 mW of noise in 3KHz (so 3.33 mW per KHz).

Now among this noise you can send your 1 mWatt signal in the way you want
(RTTY, PSK...), the bandwidth you want (within 3 KHz) and also the coding you
 want.

The judge will be the error rate: 2% is good, almost 100 % is bad.

I guess you mean 2% character errors after going through the FEC mill?

For pskmail ARQ to repair that efficiently you want an error rate of 1%.
Anything worse
generates lots of repeats or overhead through shorting of the packets.
Fortunately we can often find a channel which is good enough by using the
optimum
band and/or going to a free frequency.

73,

Rein PA0R

[digitalradio] Re: How to check my PSK modulation?

2007-10-28 Thread charmquark69
Hi Mike and all who replied to my post,

Many thanks for the tips and help - I'm going to print them all out
and take them up to the shack (it's the club shack since I can't have
deadly radiation-emitting antennas at home, and there's no internet
connection up there) and play around a little today. I don't think
my finances will stretch at the moment to include the IMD Meter -
it's certainly a great idea (and maybe a future project for
homebrew?), but seems a lot to pay for just one digimode.

I bought a new medium-range soundcard on Friday (SoundBlaster Audigy -
cost about $50) and installed it yesterday - this should be at least
better than the onboard card in the PC there and should help all
round.

As far as RF getting into the system, well the microHam cables are
all shielded, and so is most everything at the shack.

I found the other tips and help particularly interesting and useful,
since they involve simple measures and rig settings which anybody
could easily apply, and I'll play around this morning with those and
other ideas.

Thanks to all again, 73 and good digi-DX

[digitalradio] A tad off-topic - Excess coax

2007-10-28 Thread Dave
Just put up a coax-fed Windom antenna and have about 15-20 feet of
excess coax. I'd prefer to keep the overall length of the coax, just
not sure if coiling it or laying it out flat would be better. I know
the older Windoms needed a tight coil of coax near the antenna, but the
1:1 balun in this one should negate that.

Any ideas on which might be better?

PMEDIA=usbcd

I've been told that the definition of insanity is doing the same
thing over and over and expecting different results. If that is true,
then I am indeed overqualified!
Just downloaded for the third time and burned the CD for the third
time. Thanks to Rein I was able to verify the checksum as being valid,
but the same error still presents itself on each and every boot attempt.
In answer to one question, yes, the CD is bootable. It boots fine for a
bit, but always ends up at this error:

Just for fun, I tried booting the CD on the XYL's computer. Hers is a
Gateway P-IV running at 2.7 Ghz with 1 Gig of RAM. Hers got farther than
mine did in the boot process. Hers got to:

puppyserialdetect is running

It hung there for a few minutes, so I finally gave up on it.

My PC is also a Gateway, 2.0 Ghz Core 2 Duo, with 2 Gig of RAM. The only
difference I know of between hers and mine is that my hard drives are
SATA and not IDE. Not sure if the CD drive is SATA or IDE, but I suppose
that could make a difference.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions!

automatic disconnection and display of the connection/disconnection state).

So, for the ones interested by tests, here is a new test version in a ZIP test
package available in my site http://f6cte.free.fr/MULTIPSK_TEST_28_10_2007.ZIP
(copy and paste this adress in Internet Explorer (or equivalent) Net adress
field).
It contains the Multipsk test version, the help files (in English and French)
and the specifications (in English) of the ARQ FAE mode (version 1.4).
Create a tempory folder (C:/TEST, for example), unzip the files in it and start
C:\TEST\TEST\Multipsk.exe (the auxiliary files will be created automatically).

The initial central frequency in ALE400 is 1625 Hz as in ALE.

For the frequencies, here is a proposition of Bonnie (VR2/KQ6XA)

ALE400 Proposed Channels (experimental)

Hi, Chuck. Since that is just about the exact dimension for a choke

impedance? I suppose I could just wrap it up and see for myself, but
thought I should at least be nice enoough to respond, since you took the

Just downloaded for the third time and burned the CD for the third

but the same error still presents itself on each and every boot attempt.
In answer to one question, yes, the CD is bootable. It boots fine for a
bit, but always ends up at this error:

Error, cannot find Puppy on 'cd' boot media.
 PUPMODE=1 PDEV1=
 Exited to initial-ramdisk(initramfs)commandline...
(the Linux-guru can now debug. 'e3' editor is available)

It should not have any effect. Depending on the size
of the coax (rg-8 or rg-58) I would coil it up in a 5
inch to a 1 foot in diameter coil outside the shack.
If there is any RF on the outside of the coax, it will
help keep it out of the shack. If there is not any rf
on the outside of the coax , then it will not have any
effect.

Hello Andy, thank you for getting back to me. Ok, I think I'm
starting to get the idea. I can't cut and paste the text from the
DOS window, but could certainly post a screen shot of it. But in
summary here is what I've got:

First I have an error reading wsjt.ini and continuuing with defaults.
Next I have a message ID Interval 10
This sequence is repeated a second time.

Then I have a message Using PortAudio followed by a table. I am
not sure how this table will come accross in this message but here is
a try:

Audio Device Input Output Name
0 2 0 Micorsoft Sound Mapper-Input
1 2 0 Realtec HD Audio Rear Input
2 1 0 Modem #2 Line Record
3 2 0 USB Audio Codec
4 0 2 Microsoft Sound Mapper Output
5 0 2 Realtec HD Audio rear output
6 0 1 Modem #2 Line Playback
7 0 2 USB Audio CODEC

Default Input:0 Output:4
Requested Input:0 Output:0
Opening devise 0 for input, 4 for output.
Audio streams running normally.

I need to point out that the Realtec is the internal sound card and
the USB Audio Codec is the SignaLink sound card.

I hope this will be able to help you point me in the right direction.

Thank you,

Did you try to change the requested input and output settings to those that
match the USB audio codec ?
Change the settings in options in the main WSJT area.

Re: [digitalradio] A tad off-topic - Excess coax

2007-10-28 Thread Chuck Mayfield

Very little. It is a fairly broadband 1:1 transformer at HF frequencies and
it forces the currents in the center conductor and shield to be equal.
The amount of power lost in such a choke balun is very small compared to
the power delivered to the load. See The ARRL Antenna Book 21, 26-21
