Well, don't forget that the "digital signal" is still in fact only an analogue representation of a digital signal, as with any "bus" - and so is susceptible to noise messing with the accuracy of the analogue squarewave waveforms...
Now we could argue that as such a well-light shielded toslink is inherently more accurate since by definition it is impervious to RFI as it has no analogue "waveform" as such (at least not while the signal is "on the cable"...)
