My stand on this would be no, no, no. Really. No. BBDB works quite
nicely, with vast quantities of entries, using a flat file. The file
is read using native emacsisms (there's some discussion mentioning
this about 9 months or so back on the archives.) and doesn't require
you to have anything else installed. Requiring people to have access
to or use a database so they can have an addressbook is, IMHO, of no
benefit and will only result in less interest in BBDB. Also, BBDB
tends to do most of its work 'in core', writing to the file only when
you explicity save the database. Adding in a database means you have
to call the database any time you want to do anything useful OR you
have to cache everything in the emacs session, at which point any
benefits you might somehow have accrued are rather thoroughly
defeated.
I've reread your email and I don't see anything there that says /why/
you think use of a 'real' database is a good idea. I still think (and
really should go and do some implementing, I guess!) that the best way
to handle this sort of issue is to provide an import/export mechanism
with record-level granularity so that anyone who WANTS to attach their
BBDB to a database can do so. There's some old work in this direction
in the bits directory which I picked up off a website somewhere.
