The CGI.pm was a red herring. The OP is complaining that Perl does not do autoboxing. He might be interested in using this: http://search.cpan.org/~chocolate/autobox-0.11/lib/autobox.pm I know, it's another module to use... but it does provide the precious autoboxing.
