Well, there is affirmative action and there is Affirmative Action. I said that Affirmative Action is preference based on race or gender. I said that preference based on race or gender is racism. I did not say that Affirmative Action or racism is necessarily wrong.
affirmative action n. A policy or a program that seeks to redress past discrimination through active measures to ensure equal opportunity, as in education and employment. This would include everything from race-based quotas to allowing everyone on the baseball team a turn at bat. Affirmative Action A policy to enforce quotas or admission/hiring preferences based on race or gender. This can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on how it is done. I think that the old Affirmative Action programs don't work very well anymore. Hard/fast quotas based on percentage of population don't make sense. Preference based on race alone doesn't make sense. Taking into account diversity, gender, race, social, economic, left-handedness, language when making a decision does make a lot of sense. Having to interview at least one black coach when hiring NFL coaches does not make a lot of sense. (At least, it hasn't been working). Changing the interview rules so that all of the spots aren't taken before Romeo is free for the year will do a lot more to get a black coach hired in Cleveland than all the Affirmative Action rules that currently exist.
