Actually, it's not at all that simple.  

Talk to an attorney who *successfully* specializes in gun defense cases in
numerous states and he'll give you an earful.  

Pay particular attention to how your own state's laws work (according to the
attorney you retain for guidance -- not through your own naïve layperson's
misinterpretation), but it's good to hear how different states' self defense
laws contrast and compare.
