When I was 10, my father saw me with a pack if Bubble Yum. Knowing I had not been paid my allowance yet, he asked how I got it.
I eventually admitted it was from a "local" restaurant, and had not been paid for. (about 3 miles from home) He told me to go back the store, tell the owner what had happened, and apologize. Which I did. Mortifying. And backbreaking. (I made a deal with the owner to clean the parking lot and all of the woods around it, which had years and years of debris.) My father sat me down and explained stealing, and "shortcuts", a good work ethic, and what it means to be an upstanding man.
