I can only speak from personal experience, but I found the move from nothing to Mercurial (which has a similar model to Git) much easier than my previous, aborted, attempt to get going with SVN. Since then, I've had experience with both, but not Git, and I can honestly say that big merges are much happier in Mercurial than in SVN IMO.
That said, the most important thing is to use some form of source control, whether it be SVN, Git, Hg or whatever.
