He's right. A 200R4 can be built as strong as a 700R4. They are easier to swap in,have closer gear splits, and a slightly taller OD ratio. Having owned a 700R4 behind my 68's 468" BBC,I didn't like the 3.06 low gear and big drop in 2nd. The Buick GN trade has spawned a huge aftermarket of beefy parts for the 200R4 and I know some high 9sec,low 10sec GN's having good luck with them.
My car's present 355" SBC probably doesn't make much over 300hp,,much less 500-600hp. About the only other option for my car is a Tremec 5spd but installing one of those won't be a picnic and will probably cost $2500 by the time it's all said and done.
Maybe Herb will take me for a ride in his El Camino at CB'03 and convince me I need to stay with a manual trans.

There is a guy building 200r4's for Grand National owners all over the U.S.. He can build them to stand up to as much as 1000 hp. He drag races a GN with one of his trannies. He uses his car as a test bed. The 200r4 is definitely lighter than the 700r4 and may not require shortening your drive shaft to install. This guy has a trans business in Akron, Ohio. Let me know if you want his name and number.
