Just to check what I am trying to achieve here now.

1. I use a c49 (SJIS) encoding for Mincho Wadalab fonts to eventually
get access to the hwkana.

2. SJIS encoding in the tex file is converted to DNP encoding (SJISdnp.enc).

3. Somewhere the DNP encoding is converted to JIS encoding.

4. This encoding is mapped to tfm and pfb files for the Wadalab fonts.
The pfb files are all in JIS encoding (at least judging by the
directory name).

Is the above chain correct?

Now, since hwkana don't exist in JIS, what is the meaning of putting a
SJIS-encoded pfb file among the JIS-encoded ones in
$TEXMF/fonts/type1/wadalab/JIS/ ? I haven't yet done anything with
virtual fonts, but I am guessing I shouldn't need to for this part.

Regards, Gernot
