I got some more info. I added hiragana and katakana to my document, and find that in the output (below) c42min.fd is called. So I was wrong about thinking c49 applied to all the chars, somehow CJK knows to convert SJIS to JIS (from SJIS.enc?) and then use the c42 fd files. So the c49 files will I think apply *only* for the half-width katakana characters.
