    As far as I'm concerned (which doesn't mean anything), HR are a 
replaced elements[1] and, therefore, unable to be styled[*?*] beyond 
their box model[2], just as Form elements should be too.

    Browser vendors do provide a way to style them up to some point 
(e.g. I use transparent, border-less HR with a fitting background image 
in all but the IE family), but I think that's beyond what the standards 
allow. Nevertheless, I wasn't able to find a reference to the second 
point ("...unable to be styled...").
