It's sort of off-topic now since the thread of this message has moved onto PostgreSQL/SQL/Interbase comparisons, but FYI the original problem was "cannot find object" when I tried logging into my app.
It turns out the problem was an incomplete BDE install, seemed to be missing the interbase (amoungst other) drivers.
